On top of reading and editing manuscripts all day for the past week, I've suddenly found that I cannot seem to consume enough books. You know, finished work that's already edited and polished. Stuff I'm not responsible for.
This is a sharp contrast to what I've been feeling the past couple of months, and I think it's because I just wrapped up one of the two pain-in-the-rear projects that have had my brain bogged down for so long. I'm pretty sure my brain is trying to flush out all of the goop that was clogging it up because of that mess I was editing (practically rewriting) and it can only do it with fresh words.
To say I'm relieved would be a gross understatement, and everyone around me can surely tell. (Sorry for the six months of Monster Beth, family!)
As part of the purging process, I've been through five books in seven days. Without headache. Without a single profane exclamation. Without throwing red pens across the room.
Ahhh... The sweet sensation of carefree reading.
When this has happened in the past, a marathon of writing followed closely behind it. I'm doing everything short of voodoo to make sure the same thing happens this time. I have a ton of hopeful projects just waiting for the fuel for the fire - novellas already outlined on notecards, screenplays mapped and ready for drafting, and even a pair of full-length novels that have been swirling around in my head (and my notebooks) for a year or more.
*Crossing fingers.*
I don't know when the reading binge will subside, and I'm certainly not going to rush it along, but I hope that I'm filling my head with some quality food. I'll let you know how it goes.
Oh, and when the binge finally does let up, I'll be sure to list off what I've devoured.
One must be drenched in words, literally soaked in them, to have the right ones form themselves into the proper pattern at the right moment. ~ Hart Crane
